Meditation
Thursday, November 14, 2002

I am not any good at meditation. I find it very difficult to sit and be quiet before the Lord. I seem to be unable to clear my mind of the distractions that it presents to me. I know that there are people who are able to do that. When I do finally clear my mind I fall asleep. I guess that is a type of very restful meditation.
A website I have found that gives a good meditation on the daily lectionary is linked above and to the right. I like it because it often gives a historical or traditional view to what is happening in the scripture, giving information about the people and culture that Jesus lived in. So often when I learn of the historical setting and traditions of the time, I am able to more clearly see the meaning of Jesus' words.
I finally got a new journal to write in. I may on occasion continue to use this as my journal, but it will be less frequent. But before I sign off let me say that I have the most wonderful wife in the world. I love you Janet. Updated: Thursday, November 14, 2002 (6:08:45 AM) Pay It Forward
Monday, November 11, 2002

There was a movie out a while ago called pay it forward. The idea behind the movie was that if someone did a good deed for someone then the person should not pay them pack but pay it forward to others. I don't know that I agree with the whole movie, however the concept can be applied to the scripture today. Christ teaches us that to cause someone to sin is a terrible thing. "Better to have a millstone..." What if we teach someone to sin and they in turn pass it on to others. Will we be held accountable for the sins of the others as well. I fear that could be true. As a teacher I am especially vulnerable to this type of problem. In my position I have the ability to motivate and move mountains. I can teach good and even great things. Or, I can do even greater damage. I can give in to the complaining, or encourage wrong speach or mock, degrade and disrespect the students and I will be teaching sin. My challenge today is to "Pay it Forward" in a good way. Find people who need help and do it. Promote good and even great deeds and encourage the people to pass it on. Amen! Recently I found out that The C. S. Lewis book Perelandra, which I had read in High School, was the second book in a trilogy. So I decided to begin reading the whole Space Trilogy. I find it very easy to begin to believe that the fiction could even be real. I know that at the time it was written it was probably easier to believe since science had not advanced as far as it has today. But I find that the truths illuminated in the fiction to be very real and it gives a very different perspective to the way that I look at things today. I am looking forward to reading the final book in the trilogy. Praise the Lord! Updated: Friday, November 8, 2002 (5:51:50 AM) High School Friendships
Friday, November 1, 2002

I have heard it said that the friendships that you make in high school are the ones that can have the longest lasting deepest friendships. As I grow older I find myself really appreciating my high school friendships more and more. I have two great friends that the Lord has given to me who take me for who I am and love me anyway. They are willing to get up in the mornings and call me to greater things, to challenge me to be stronger and better.
I also find that when I run into other high school friends from years past that there is a bond. Even when there was no bond before. As time moves on the problems that I faced seem to fade and the good times that we had seem to remain. I pray that for the kids that I teach that one day they will be able to have the same experience. I know that some will be friends for life and others will find that they can be friends even though hardships and differences exist today. Amen!
